P000000: Liberta Projects Job Jar

A running job jar of ideas and notes on projects and tasks for developing, operating, and maintaining the Libertà computer system, its resources, and its presence on Centrale.

These projects are for Libertà itself, rather than the construction of this mini-Web about Libertà. It takes work to keep them straight, and some tasks seem to live in both worlds.

	2004-01-10	Do I need a notes section for each of my machines? Or does projects cover it?
	2004-01-10	Create a P040103 diary about the Norton Antivirus and the strange behavior, what is done with it, etc.
	2004-01-10	Startr P040102 page for backing material off of Liberta's Windows 98 configuration for preservation on any Windows XP Pro upgrade. This material is VickiWare and is not at the hardware and XP Pro-required drivers, etc., level for bringing the base system up to XP. That is part of the Liberta construction set.
	2004-01-10	One of the amazing things was to learn how to get into the Dell System Configuration Utility (on the ROM) and then change Boot precedence to allow booting from the CD-ROM. I need that for Windows XP Pro install anyhow, because I want to do a full install and disk reformat along with change from FAT to NTFS. So I must be extra careful in being sure that I have everything of Vicki's that is needed in a new system. The biggie will be the old Outlook inbox.
	2004-01-10	There are end-of-year (2003) and start-of-year (2004) activities that Liberta is required for, especially for the Millennia-Antica business. So Vicki pulled a spreadsheet of data that allows us to file business taxes and sales tax teturns without the computer. But it will be best to have it reinstalled and operational on XP Pro and Office 2003 as quickly as possible. So backing it up is urgent.
	2004-01-10	I used a CD-ROM of Norton System Works 2003 to boot onto Libertà and run a scan of the basics. It went nuts in Temporary Internet Files. I learned my lesson, got the computer up enough to delete as much as I could, and then redid the CD-ROM booted NAV Emergency Scan. It passed with flying colors (but that doesn't mean there isn't an infection). I will try the internet-based virus check now just to be double certain.
	2004-01-10	I tried reinstalling NAV, but the code thinks uninstall is what's needed. I figured that was all right except the uninstall didn't complete. So I have a NAV that won't uninstall and that can't be installed over, and that is not working. This creates a small dilemma because a new NAV won't install over an existing one. That means I am forced to upgraded Vicki's computer, especially before we leave the country and also before there is any chance of one of the famous virus wake-up-and-cause-damage situations arises.
	2004-01-10	Well, now things got interesting. Vicki had a problem on Libertà while we were making on-line hotel searches for a trip to Italy. She thought it was hung, and I confirmed that NAV wouldn't fire up. These are symptomatic of viruses and worms, some of which disable antivirus operation and also interfere at start-up. In this case, we also thought that Office wasn't working. We have confirmed that there are these weird delays, that NAV is still messed up, and if one is patient, the delays are all right. In particular, I can access her hard drive as a read-only share from Centro, so I have what is sufficient to back it up.
	2004-01-10	I have been making notes about this in *nfoWare* and in the construction zone, but not here in the project area. I will bring them here.
