OOX: ISO 5–month Ballot Period Ends September 2, 2007

From Stephen McGibbon, this word that the ISO/IEC JTC1 ballot on DIS 29500 (Office Open XML as specified in ECMA-376) has begun and the ballot period ends on Sunday, September 2, 2007 (Labor Day weekend in the US).

Available materials:

  • ECMA International press release, 2007–04–02: Office Open XML Reaches Next Step in ISO/IEC Process

  • ECMA TC45/2007/006 (57pp. PDF file), 2007–02–28: Response Document — National Body Comments from 30–Day Review of the Fast Track Ballot for ISO/IEC DIS 29500 (ECMA-376)  [If you are uncomfortable with direct links to PDF, you can also find the 305kB Ecma_Responses.pdf file, dated 2007–04–02, in this directory.  This is the only official release of the ECMA response that I am aware of, and I encourage others to refer to this version.  I am certain we’ll see some pent-up analysis and rhetorical excursions on this material now that it is available in public.

  • ECMA, December 2006: Standard ECMA-376 Office Open XML File Formats.  These are the official documents, freely available to download.  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE use these versions, in Zipped PDF or Zipped DOCX (with annexes) as you prefer.  These are the easiest to navigate and they have the correct tables of content, hyperlinks, and printed page numbers.  Use those in review, verifying and studying the objections of others, and in understanding how these specifications can be applied.

Those who have printed out the single PDF that was circulated for the 30–day ballot will find that their documents with their printed page numbers will work just fine and they can print out just the new front-matter pages if they want to be completely current.

For individuals not participating in National Standards Bodies who have technical contributions and questions for clarification, I am not sure what the best avenue is.  I’m looking for it too.  For constructive discussion, I think that the OpenXMLDeveloper.org site may be an useful avenue.

I’m not aware of an open-to-the-public (bidirectional) discussion list in ECMA TC45 like the ones for OASIS ODF, but there is an E-mail address for TC45 Feedback (TC45feedback PIGTAIL ecma-international.org) that might work for feedback on specific elements.
