OOX-ODF: Taming the Guerilla

Bob Sutor just linked to a great article and interview by ComputerWorld’s Carol Sliwa.  I second Bob’s recommendation, but I don’t think you should sell yourself short by focusing on the initial paragraphs alone.

The entire interview with Massachusetts ex-CIO Louis Gutierrez is a great example of how a seasoned government official dealt with a spectrum of stresses and the realities of an imperfect world.   There is a lot more to learn from Gutierrez’s perspective, and what he stands for and how he operates, than to make this be all about Microsoft.  I found his separation of bad behavior from the persons who engaged in it to be refreshing and grounds for some confidence that all of us are learning important lessons from this and similar situations.

There’s some Zen/Karma weirdness to an executive from IBM focusing on a particularly unacceptable behavior from Microsoft marketing/sales representatives.  I am not challenging Massachusetts ex-CIO Guiterrez’s account in any way.  I’ve ceased being surprised by what some people do when they have a 500-pound guerilla to threaten with.  That doesn’t make it acceptable from any source.
