I need an usable CD-RW for my upgrading and refresh of the Centrale computer configurations. I also need it as part of a regularly-followed backup plan that mitigates risk of data and computer loss during my dissertation project over the next six months, and other projects thereafter. As the first urgent step, Centro will be shut down and I will vacuum it out, clean everything I can, and see if there is anything that is cured by that. If the Yamaha drive is still not functioning as a writer, I will install the new drive.
Cleaning procedure
Perform some routine work on Compagno and shut it down.
Vacuum the general office area because it needs it anyhow
Dust around the computer and desk surface (how I took a fall earlier today)
Open the case and vacuum everything possible
Extract the drive cage and clean, check connections, etc.
Reassemble enough to run the system
Drive Test
I obtained a replacement Sony CRX230AD CD-RW drive that will install on Windows 98 SE and that also has software and drivers for Windows XP Pro. This will allow me to backup my systems and then reinstall the software after upgrading to Windows XP Pro SP2 on Centro.
Internal CD-RW drives are now very inexpensive and are practically disposable items. It looks like I might upgrade the DVD-ROM drive to some sort of DVD-RW too, depending on how the use of it for movies is altered by upgrade to Windows XP.
In preparing to perform a clean install on Libertà, I moved the important-to-preserve material to Centro for transfer to a CD-ROM. The CD writing software was unable to burn a disk, and it appeared to be related to an inability to achieve the proper power level for writing.
Because the material was backed-up on Centro, I went ahead and did the upgrade of Libertà. I was able to place the rebuilt Libertà on the Centrale SOHO and recover the backup from Centro.
